Collagen may already have a place in the care you give yourself. Or this may be the first powder you are considering. Either way, the choice can include more than collagen alone.
Essentials starts with 10 grams of hydrolyzed collagen peptides, Types I and III. Astaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin join them, alongside vitamin C. You get the full collagen amount with those additions already in the powder, without bovine colostrum or separate products to find for the ingredients included here.
Those are two of the skin qualities that brought collagen into human research. A 2023 review pooled 26 randomized trials involving 1,721 people and found results favoring hydrolyzed collagen for hydration and elasticity. The authors also identified study limitations.
A 2025 review found no significant benefits in its high-quality or non-pharmaceutical-company-funded study groups. The evidence is mixed. These studies do not establish a visible change from Essentials or tell you what you will see in your own mirror.
The research also reaches beyond collagen. An astaxanthin review found favorable pooled moisture and elasticity results, but no significant reduction in wrinkle depth. The studies were small and varied. Essentials includes natural astaxanthin from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis alongside its collagen, bringing another ingredient with its own skin research into your next jar.
Lutein and zeaxanthin come together in Essentials, at 10 mg and 0.6 mg from marigold extract. Human research has investigated these carotenoids for skin measures, using different oral and topical preparations. Those findings do not establish that this powder reproduces the studied results.
Vitamin C has a different reason to be here: your body needs it to make collagen normally. It joins the collagen and carotenoids in the same formula. Combining the ingredients does not demonstrate that their benefits add up; the finished Essentials blend has not been clinically tested.
The next time you reach for your collagen, the astaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C are already there. Your next jar can bring home the additions that interested you, alongside the full collagen amount you came for.

The ingredient research
Skin moisture and elasticity brought collagen and carotenoids into the research. Some findings are encouraging, while higher-quality collagen studies have challenged the benefits. Here are the sources, including those limitations.
| Ingredient and source | What was studied | Main finding | Limits and funding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reviews of oral collagen trials measuring skin hydration and elasticity, including a later analysis examining study quality and industry funding. | The 2023 review reported pooled hydration and elasticity improvements. The 2025 analysis found no significant benefit in high-quality or non-company-funded subgroups. The 2026 review described preliminary evidence, with most trials at high risk of bias. | The 2025 review found no significant skin benefits in the high-quality or non-company-funded subgroups. The reviewers did not support collagen supplements for preventing or treating skin aging. Trials used different peptide materials and amounts; 10 grams in this formula is not a promise of a study's result. | |
Natural astaxanthinZhou et al. 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis ↗ | A systematic review and meta-analysis of oral astaxanthin studies assessing skin moisture, elasticity and wrinkle depth. | Pooled improvements in skin moisture and elasticity; no significant change in wrinkle depth | The trials are small, heterogeneous, and often commercially connected, and wrinkle depth did not change significantly. Astaxanthin is not an oral sunscreen, does not replace topical sun protection, and does not repair sun damage. |
Lutein with zeaxanthinPalombo et al. 2007 (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology), N=40 women, 12 weeks ↗ | One 12-week study of 40 women assessed skin hydration, surface lipids and elasticity using oral lutein with zeaxanthin. Final material matching remains pending. | Skin hydration, lipid content and elasticity improved versus placebo in one 12-week trial | One small trial with commercial involvement studied specific oral and topical preparations. It did not test the Essentials combination or show that adding lutein and zeaxanthin to its other ingredients produces an extra benefit. These ingredients do not replace sunscreen. |
| Established vitamin C physiology summarized by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, rather than a trial of this finished collagen formula. | Required for normal collagen biosynthesis; no evidence that adding it amplifies a collagen supplement | Vitamin C's nutritional role does not show that adding it to a collagen supplement improves skin outcomes in people who already get enough. It is not evidence of a collagen-boosting effect from this combination. |

We reviewed ingredients sold in collagen weight-loss formulas. These two additions do not earn a place in our skin-focused Essentials formula.

An uncertain benefit with a safety concern.
NIH’s NCCIH reports unclear weight-loss benefit and liver damage associated with garcinia products. Some cases were severe, although this appears uncommon. Those reports do not establish the risk of this product’s 50 mg serving. We do not see a reason to add garcinia to our skin-focused formula.
Market label: 100 mg
A fat-burning claim needs human evidence.
The human trial cited by NIH tested a different multi-ingredient supplement alongside diet and exercise. It cannot establish a weight-loss effect from raspberry ketones alone. That evidence does not earn this addition a place in our collagen formulas.
These findings concern the ingredients generally. They do not establish the risk at this label’s amounts or show that this particular product caused harm. Our collagen formulas include neither ingredient; their finished combinations have not been clinically tested.

The astaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C come with your collagen. Your current powder may include some of those additions or none of them. Essentials gives you all of them alongside 10 grams of collagen peptides; an improved personal skin result has not been established for the finished blend.
No. It contains collagen peptides, carotenoids and vitamin C without bovine colostrum. It is not vegan, and leaving out colostrum does not establish milk-allergy safety. Complete supplier, allergen and cross-contact information still needs verification before purchase.
Essentials is a powder you take by mouth. It does not replace sunscreen or a prescribed treatment. Its ingredient research concerns particular study preparations; it does not establish that you can substitute Essentials for a topical product.
